"all that happens means something; nothing you do is ever insignificant." - aldous huxley
this journal comes and goes. i won't promise faithful entries documenting my personal life, but i usually post with things that inspire me or things that i find attractive. pictures, for example, or poems, music, anecdotes, quotations - all fall into that category. if you add me please leave a note. let's start something here.

at blackwater pond
at blackwater pond the tossed waters have settled after a night of rain. i dip my cupped hands. i drink a long time. it tastes like stone, leaves, fire. it falls cold into my body, waking the bones. i hear them deep inside me, whispering 'oh what is that beautiful thing that just happened?'

coming home on the bus up finchley road, the side of the street suddenly drops out, just for a moment, into this vast expanse of train tracks and sky. i can't pass it without looking up from my book or my conversation; space like that is so rare in the city.
tonight, coming home, it was about eight thirty and the sun was setting. as we came to the train tracks i looked out: the sky was pale yellow with these dark lilac clouds, hanging. and in those few seconds when the bus was rattling past, the sunset was so remarkable that every person on the upper deck - every single person - looked out too, all of us looking out to the left, down at these train tracks, and the clouds.

i had my final exam today [art history]. it went well, and even featured some of my favorite pieces like barbara kruger's "your gaze hits the side of my face" and "dying gaul" and whistler's "falling rocket". and now the class is all done. i'll sure miss it, but no more work means plenty of time to read read read, and to play, finally!
and it's been so beautiful lately! suddenly spring has arrived and that means skirts without tights, waltzing out the front door sans jacket, and picnics in the sun. yesterday brendan and i lay in st johns wood park for several hours between classes, eating lunch and lying on my grandmother's purple quilt. [lunch was tortilla chips and salsa, fruit salad, and also toasted bagels filled with mozzarella cheese, pesto and sundried tomatoes. delicious.] i am looking forward to seeing my friends for hours, to no one having urgent work or appointments or anything to keep them from lounging around with me. the other day for example. we played kickball on primrose hill, and it was such fun: i even made it home a couple times. and also a lovely prospect is long hours by myself outside, reading in sunglasses while they're in rehearsal. suddenly i'm making a real dent in "infinite jest", which is amazing and which i would highly recommend despite its being 1000+ pages. it is fast becoming one of my favorites.

it's a classic, and a frequent player on nineties radio, but i think even taken out of its context it's powerful, moving, simple - really one of my favorite songs. here's joan osborne's "one of us" for the taking.

it turns out that when john mayer isn't trying to be well-liked, he can make good music. the john mayer trio is much more jazzy than radio-john mayer, i like it much better. i listened to "try! john mayer trio live in concert"over and over today. i'll post it in a day or two.
also, i discovered this entry of cinnayum's today and i am absolutely head over heels for the bed pocket. i would love to be domestic like this, and able to make such beautiful things. and how wonderful to have a pocket like that, instead of things lying on the floor and crowded on my little table like they are now! i would even fill it with almost the same things as in the picture, my glasses and my book and perhaps a magazine. and of course pens and paper, and my journal. it's such a neat idea.
